SC fines U.P.

NEW DELHI APRIL. 30 The Supreme Court today directed all the States to seize from the diagnostic centres possessing unregistered ultrasound machines and using them for sex determination tests.

The court was informed that except Rajasthan other States had not submitted complete details.

As the Uttar Pradesh Government which had failed to honour its undertaking given on April 9 that it would comply with the orders within 15 days, the court imposed a cost of Rs. 5,000 on it and adjourned the proceedings to August 23.

A three-Judge Bench also direted the States to file the action taken reports by August 5.

The Court was passing interim orders on a petition filed by an NGO, CEHAT.
