Opinion - Letters to the Editor

A charade

Sir, — The debate on secularism initiated by the Opposition and propped up by sections of the media is a charade. The media is dancing to the tunes of some political upstarts. The Opposition's role has been anything but constructive. Its unruly behavior, and disreputable tactics have wreaked havoc on the functioning of Parliament.

The Opposition parties have become opportunistic parties. The press is lionizing political cretins.

The riots in Gujarat are a manifestation of the historic schisms that exist between Hindus and Muslims.

The challenge is to bridge this social divide through socio-economic and cultural means. Politicising a social conflict is not going to heal the wounds of Gujarat.

Sanjay Bhattacharya,

Pondicherry
