Did he vote or not?

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 1 . Confusion prevailed on whether or not the Janata Dal (United) leader, Devendra Prasad Yadav, participated in the voting on the Opposition-sponsored motion on Gujarat in the Lok Sabha this morning. Going by Mr. Yadav's claim, he had ``refrained'' from taking part in the voting on the motion at the end of the marathon debate in the House. A former Union Minister, Mr. Yadav claimed that another party MP, Shashi Kumar, also had followed suit.

On the other hand, the party chief whip, Ramjivan Singh, asserted that all the six party MPs had voted in accordance with the party's three-line whip. He said that, in fact, Mr. Kumar had told him in the House that he had cast the vote as directed.

Mr. Yadav, who had demanded the removal of the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, was exercised that the JD (U), a constituent of the NDA, decided to vote against the motion after having struck a strident posture.
