Something to chew on

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 1. Desperately trying to target the Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi, during Tuesday's heated debate in the Lok Sabha on Gujarat, the treasury benches finally zoomed in on her, charging her with committing an affront to the House by "chewing gum".

The Congress did not bite the bait and ignored the issue.

Ms. Gandhi was unfazed, even smiling as Cabinet Ministers George Fernandes and Uma Bharti were making the accusation.

Ms. Gandhi is used to taking clove or cardamom to soothe her throat.

The treasury benches characterised it as an affront to the House, but a large number of MPs, including some Ministers, openly chew tobacco in the House.
