NHRC extends deadline

By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI MAY 1. Expressing its anguish over the Gujarat Government's failure to submit its final report by April 30 on the gruesome incidents in the State, the National Human Rights Commission has granted it two weeks time for doing so.

The Commission, presided over by its Chairperson, Justice J.S. Verma, at its meeting today observed that the Gujarat Government was specifically asked to respond to the contents of the confidential report of the NHRC team.

The Gujarat Government had sent its interim reply on April 13, seeking further time to submit its final report. Meanwhile the Union Home Ministry on April 16 assured the Commission that a detailed reply would be submitted by April 30, but no reply was sent till yesterday.

But in the light of serious allegations made in the confidential report, it wanted to give another opportunity to the State to reply/comment on the specific instances.
