Sir, The debate on the Gujarat situation in the Lok Sabha and the subsequent voting, abstentions, and walkouts clearly indicate that the regional political parties are increasingly guided by "political compulsions" and not by the merits of the issue. The Telugu Desam Party's anti-Congressism, the National Conference's electoral calculations vis-a-vis Kashmir, the Trinamool Congress's need to be seen in the corridors of power, the AIADMK's desire to join the NDA, and the DMK's need to thwart the AIADMK's design have influenced and guided these parties to bail out the NDA Government. Ironically, it is these "political compulsions" that will keep the NDA flock together in the coming days. The voting on the censure motion has only succeeded in strengthening the NDA Government. Raghav Venkatesh, Gulbarga, (Karnataka)
