Letters to the Editor
Sir, The debate on Gujarat in the Lok Sabha which started on Tuesday continued till the wee hours on Wednesday. The politicians appeared to be anxious to shower vituperation on one another. No member put forward practical steps to curb the violence and offer solace and succour to the victims of the carnage. Since the numerical equation was a foregone conclusion, the whole affair turned out to be a heartless exercise of mudslinging. Everything except the real resolution of the situation was discussed. The Telugu Desam Party's game would have generated suspense had its numbers been crucial in the voting. Perhaps many members wanted to make political capital out of a human tragedy. It is time we made a cost-benefit analysis of the marathon parliamentary exercise with the taxpayers' money. B.S. Warrier, Thiruvananthapuram
