Shwetha topples Tejaswini

BANGALORE MAY 2. G.K. Shwetha, the talented lass from Bijapur, had a memorable outing during her last visit to Bangalore, when she won a double crown in the Century Club -AITA junior ranking tournament last month. The youngster again caused a flutter at the Embassy AITA junior (under-14 and under-16) ranking championship when she toppled the top seed, Tejaswini Datta of Andhra Pradesh 6-3, 6-2 and entered the quarterfinals.

Shwetha's hopes of double delight were spoiled by Asha Nandakumar, who knocked her out of contention in the girls' under-16 singes. Asha scripted a facile 6-1, 6-2 win over Shwetha, who took to the court again after a brief respite after her under-14 tie.

The top seed, K. Pooja was given a scare by Varsha Dutta before the AP girl closing out the match 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 to enter the quarterfinals. But the second-seeded Neha Rana and the fourth-seeded, Karina Ahuja weren't that lucky.

Neha went down tamely to Preethi Shravan of Andhra Pradesh 3-6, 3-6, while E. Ashmita of Tamil Nadu defeated Karina 6-3,6-0.
