`State releasing water to TN'

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore May 2. Karnataka has maintained that it is releasing Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu as laid down in the June 1991 interim award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The Minister for Water Resources, H.K. Patil (in picture), told presspersons here today that as on April 28 this year, 185.7 tmcft. of water had been released to Tamil Nadu. The balance of 19.3 tmcft. (totalling 205 tmcft. of water) had to be released by the end of the month, and it would be done. The Minister was asked about the reported statement of the Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister, O. Paneerselvam, that Karnataka was not adhering to the interim award in the matter of release of water. Mr. Patil maintained that the farmers of Tamil Nadu were not facing any problems this year. In fact, it was the Karnataka farmers who were facing a shortage of water. The Government was complying with the decisions of the monitoring committee of the Cauvery River Authority.
