Brojen performs hat-trick

Madikere May 2 . Coorg Hockey Association succumbed 1-4 to Indian Airlines in the Kodagu Cup tournament for the Chief Minister's Cup here today. Brojen Singh notched up the first hat-trick of this tournament while the other goal was scored by Somanna. Ganapathy was the lone scorer for CHA.

In the first match of the day, Combined Coorg XI held Madras Engineering Group to a 1-1 draw. Dinesh for Coorg XI and Bhengra for MEG were the scorers.

Indian Airlines, playing its first match since the recently concluded Mumbai tournament, looked a little rusty at first. Playing on the gravel ground its forwards took time to get a feel of the conditions. It was in the ninth minute that Indian Airlines took the lead with Brojen Singh passing on to K.M. Somanna and with the keeper Sharanu drawn out it was easy pickings for Somanna. However the CHA XI played well to keep the IA raiders at bay and also managed to level scores three minutes after the second half, veteran M.K. Ganapathy being the goalscorer off a pass from Nanaiah.

Indian Airlines finally coming to terms with the playing conditions and having assessed the Coorg Hockey Association's weak spots now began to force home its superiority. A penalty stroke awarded by umpire Karunakaran when a defender handled the ball in the goal area was converted by Brojen Singh. A neat move in the 48th minute ended in Brojen's second goal and a rasping reverse flick from the top of the circle in the 63rd minute ensured that Brojen was the hero of the day.

CHA XI did manage to thwart a number of other raids essayed by the Airlines forwards.

Umpire Venu Uthappa flashed the yellow card at Airlines' team manager A.B. Subbaiah the former international goalkeeper for deserting his post during the match.

Earlier in the first match, Combined Coorg XI took the lead through junior international player K.P Dinesh who broke through the Sappers' defence in the 25th minute. MEG laboured hard for the equaliser and finally succeeded in the 58th minute when Bhengra scored off a penalty corner.

The tournament suffered another setback when CISF pulled out in the last minute. Tournament Director A.S. Bawa took a stern view of the last minute withdrawals and wanted to penalise the errant teams crying off after confirming its entries.
