The detentions came even as the MQM gave a call for a day-long strike to protest the murder of two senior leaders just before the April 30 referendum. The party alleged that the administration had not given any reason for the detentions. A political understanding between the Musharraf regime and the MQM fell through on the issue of the murders. A day after the referendum, the port city of Karachi witnessed violence. On Wednesday, the Sindh Government called out the Army, the Rangers and the Frontier Constabulary to assist the police in maintaining law and order, particularly in the wake of the MQM strike. Reports said two vehicles were damaged and seven persons injured when a bomb went off. One of the injured later succumbed to injuries.
