Move on to ex-communicate Muslim BSP MLAs

By J.P. Shukla

LUCKNOW May 2. Muslim MLAs of the Bahujan Samaj Party have been put under heavy pressure by community leaders to sever their links with the party, which has joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party to form the new Government in Uttar Pradesh.

The MLAs were first asked to emulate the former MP, Arif Mohammed Khan, who resigned in protest against the BSP's move to enter into a coalition with the BJP but the advice was ignored. Now, a move is on to ex-communicate the MLAs on the ground that they are functioning against the interests of Islam by supporting a party, which has made common cause with the BJP under whose Government a large number of Muslims had been killed in riots in Gujarat.

The president of the Muslim Forum, M.K. Sherwani, talking to newspersons here today, said that Muslims should sever all their social ties with the BSP MLAs. He urged the Muslim clergy to issue a "fatwa'' to ex-communicate the Muslim representatives. At another press conference, the Shia leader, Kalbe Jawwad, and Maulana Mufti Abul Irfan of the famous Firangi Mahal school of Islamic studies made similar appeals.

The BJP was responsible for continuous blood letting of Muslims for the past over two months, it was alleged. These MLAs were now making common cause with the BJP and as such they were the "traitors of the community". The two leaders called upon Muslims to completely boycott these MLAs.
