Entry tax bill introduced amid protest

CHENNAI May 2. Amid protest from the Left parties, the TMC and the Congress, the Industries Minister, C. Velusamy, today introduced in the Assembly a Bill to impose entry tax on as many as 22 commodities.

While the DMK remained silent, members of the CPI(M), the CPI, the TMC and the Congress opposed the Government's decision.

However, cement, including white cement and refractory cement and its substitutes, which were brought under the entry tax net last December, have been exempted in an effort at checking spiralling cement prices in the State. Instead, entry tax would be levied on aluminium.

It would be levied on high speed and light diesel oil, furnace oil and low sulphur heavy stock and aluminium with effect from December 1, 2001.

The other 16 items would be taxed from March 27, 2002. They are: asbestos cement sheets; atta, maida, sooji, rava and wheat flour; bitumen, ceramic sanitary wares and sanitary fittings of every description; compressors and parts and accessories of air-conditioners and refrigerators; HDPE granules and PVC resins and HDPE\PP woven fabrics; iron and steel as described in the second schedule to the Tamil Nadu General Sales Tax Act, 1959; lubricating oil, grease and lube base oil; marbles and marble tiles, granite blocks and slabs and ceramic tiles and glazed floor, roofing and wall tiles; motor spirit, newsprint, paper and paperboards excluding coated paper, tissue paper, MICR, electrical grade paper, glassine paper and file boards; potassium chlorate; linear alkyl benzene (LAB), soda ash, caustic soda and chlorine; PVC pipes, tubes and fittings; tobacco and tobacco products including cigarettes, cigarillos, cigar, cheroots, mixtures of tobacco for pipes, cut-tobacco, hookah tobacco, snuff of tobacco and chewing tobacco excluding beedis.
