Building regularisation scheme for 5 Corpns.

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI May 2. Residents in the Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli Corporations can soon have their unauthorisedly constructed and altered buildings ``regularised'' on payment of a fee not exceeding Rs. 20,000 per sq.m.

A Bill for a one-time scheme for regularisation in the five corporation areas was moved in the Assembly today.

Any building or class of buildings constructed or altered unauthorisedly on or before March 31, 2002 would be regularised after the fee, not exceeding Rs.20,000 per sq.m., was collected.

Different rates would be prescribed for different classes of buildings and for different parts of the municipal corporation areas. According to the Bill, amending the Madurai, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Acts and the Town and Country Planning Laws, applications for regularising the constructions should be submitted on or before July 31, 2002.

The statement of objects and reasons for the Bill introduced by the Local Administration Minister, C. Duriaraj, said: ``There are a large number of unauthorised constructions and alterations of buildings and unauthorised development in lands or class of lands.''

Hence, the Government decided to introduce the one-time scheme.

A regularisation scheme for unauthorised constructions in Chennai is already under implementation.
