HYDERABAD May 2. The former CLP leader, P. Janardhan Reddy, has alleged that the Government is not sincere in bringing Krishna waters to the State capital to tide over the acute scarcity and meet its future needs. At a press conference here today, Mr. Janardhan Reddy said a memorandum would be presented to the Governor, C. Rangarajan, on May 6 urging him to exert pressure on the Government on the issue. Mr. Reddy said he would lead procession from Rajiv Gandhi statue to Raj Bhavan on that day to highlight the drinking water crisis in the city and the lack of the initiative by the Government to implement the Krishna water project. The Congress leader said on the eve of elections to the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, a G.O. was issued according administrative sanction for the project costing Rs. 875 crores. The Government's contribution was mentioned as Rs. 300 crores, to be released in two equal instalments in 2002-03 and 2003-04. But after the electoral interests were served, only Rs. 20 crores was earmarked for the project. It is reported that the Cabinet had accorded an administrative sanction for the scheme, Mr. Reddy said and wanted to know as to what had happened to the earlier sanction. Mr. Janardhan Reddy said the city and surrounding municipalities of Ranga Reddy district required 300 MGD of water, as per the estimates of engineers, but the supply from the existing sources was only 143 MGD. He recalled the statement of the then Municipal Administration Minister, B.V. Mohan Reddy, in the Assembly in 1995 that the Krishna water supply to the city would be a reality by 2001. It had now turned a mirage, he charged.
