Haq simply unstoppable; Kiwis struggle

LAHORE MAY 2. Inzamam-ul-Haq's blazing 329 runs gave Pakistan its best ever Test total of 643 against New Zealand and then paceman Shoaib Akhtar snared four wickets to have the tourist reeling at 58 for six in reply on day two of the first Test on Thursday.

New Zealand, needing 444 runs to make Pakistan bat again in this five-day match, was in deep trouble after Akhtar ran through the top order in a sensational opening spell of 7-3-11-4 before stumps.

Off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq further compounded New Zealand's problems when he had Craig McMillan (15) caught close at the wicket two overs before close, while Lou Vincent's (21) 90 minute resistance came to an end when he edged to wicketkeeper Rashid Latif off leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.

Akhtar, who recorded an unofficial fastest ever delivery of 161 kph during Pakistan's 3-0 limited-overs series sweep against New Zealand, was devastating in the Test series opener, removing Matthew Horne, Mark Richardson, captain Stephen Fleming and Chris Harris.

Haq, the 32-year-old middle-order batsman, broke a host of records during his nine-hour and 39-minute innings which included 38 fours and nine sixes and faced 436 balls as the Kiwi bowling attack struggled on a flat track and scorching heat.

He was denied a runner on 211 by Fleming after lunch when he developed cramps. But Haq didn't complain of the New Zealand captain's objection.

``It is in the rules that one can have runner with the consent of rival captain. He (Fleming) didn't allow me to use the runner and it was perfect with me. I have no complaints,'' Haq said.

``I wanted to dedicate this triple century to my father who has recovered from heart ailment. I can't give him more happiness than the way I batted today.''

The triple century lifted Haq to No. 10 in the all time list of triple centurions. West Indian Brian Lara holds the test record of 375 made against England in 1993-94.

``Obviously it's my best Test innings because scoring 329 runs is not an easy job in Test matches.'' Haq fell just eight runs short of Pakistan's only other Test triple century-maker, Hanif Muhammad's record of 337 against West Indies 44 years ago— AP
