Letters to the Editor
Sir, The anger, anguish and disgust over the crudeness and mendacity of the Government and its allies on the Gujarat issue have been amply discussed in your Editorial. You have highlighted the need for confidence-building measures, for adequate relief, but have we seen enough emphasis on `justice'? The Gujarat carnage saw some of the most bestial crimes against an innocent population. We needed a ringing statement that the murderers and rapists will be identified, hunted down and meted out an exemplary punishment. Instead of peace marches there should have been an identification parade of the Hindutva ringleaders before the women of the relief camps. The BJP might survive the immediate crisis by buying votes, and the Gujarat VHP and Bajrang Dal leaders may go around with Z plus security, but they should remember the fate of Mussolini, and the dock at Nuremberg. The crime against humanity that this regime has committed will extract a terrible retribution. Civilised society is based on certain norms, and those who violate it with the vileness that one saw in Gujarat should count their days like the Taliban. Pinaki Majumdar, Allahabad
