President, PM condole Oberoi's death

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI MAY 3. The President, K. R. Narayanan, today condoled the death of M. S. Oberoi, founder and Chairman of the Oberoi Group of Hotels.

Mr. Narayanan said Oberoi also excelled as a Parliamentarian in both Houses and actively participated in the proceedings. ``Oberoi, through his bold initiative and imagination set up a chain of hotels of international standard which brought India to the mainstream of hospitality industry at the world level,'' the President said in his message.

"In his sad demise the country has lost a remarkable entrepreneur whose foundational contributions will be long remembered,'' the President said.

The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, said Oberoi had set a new standard of excellence and professionalism in India and planted the flag of Indian hoteliers in other countries.

"At the same time, in his long life he found the time to participate in public life serving three terms in Parliament,'' Mr. Vajpayee said. — PTI

Trade expresses sorrow

Trade and commerce have expressed their sorrow at the passing away of the doyen of Indian hotel industry, Rai Bahadur M.S. Oberoi.

The Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India has expressed shock at the death of the "great visionary''. The president of Assocham, K. K. Nohria, described Oberoi as a man who "dedicated his life to building India's tourism industry.''

In a statement, the chairman of Assocham's Expert Committee on Tourism and Civil Aviation, Subhash Goyal, said, "in the death of Oberoi, the tourism industry has lost one of the greatest hoteliers.''

The Confederation of Indian Industry also claimed that the passing away of Oberoi would leave a void in the hospitality industry.

The president of CII, Ashok Soota, said, "Oberoi's has been a truly rags-to-riches story and he has been credited with changing the idiom for hospitality and reshaping the industry in the country.''

Mentioning how none other than J. R. D. Tata had conferred the title of "India's most exclusive hotelier'' on Oberoi, he said the philosophy behind building this empire in the later leader's own words was not merely making money but to think big and to always offer the best.

In a message on the passing away of his father, the late hotelier's son, P. R. S. Oberoi, said, "His passing away is an irreplaceable loss. He was my mentor, father and friend ... always a pillar of strength for the family and members of The Oberoi Group. His presence will be sorely missed.''
