Trippings in Karnataka hit Southern grid

By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad May 3 . There have been seven grid disturbances since March 1 this year in the southern region, mainly because of the tripping of the 400/220 kva sub station at Hoody near Bangalore, and there is need for Karnataka to rectify the defect in order to save the Southern power grid.

Officials said that because of the fault, two units in Vijayawada Thermal Power Station tripped, one 200 MW unit falling to 20 MW and another to 50 MW today, but the system revived within a short time without causing serious dislocation.

The Southern grid is functioning at a frequency of 48 cycles per second, which is a critical factor because even a small disturbance can disrupt power supply. The ideal frequency is 50 cycles but an additional power of 800 MW is required to achieve this frequency.

Andhra Pradesh is also seeking the concurrence of the Orissa Government to carry out repair and maintenance of the generator at Machkund power station, but there is delay in getting the required clearance. The Machkund power station, which has a capacity of 120 MW, is 50 years old and is generating only 70 to 80 MW.

If the repair is carried out at a cost of Rs 124 crores, by reinsulating the Stator and changing the governors then the power station can deliver its full capacity when the monsoon sets in.
