Many dead in ferry mishap

DHAKA MAY 4. Several passengers were feared drowned after a ferry carrying 150 people capsized midway in the Meghna river in central Bangladesh on Friday night, official said today.

According to Bangladesh Television, so far only two bodies have been recovered and nearly 100 passengers rescued from the river. The Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, has ordered an inquiry into the mishap. Newspapers gave conflicting reports of number of the those on board. While some dailies said there were 400 people, another put the number to 300.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority said the ferry was carrying between 125 and 150 people when it left for Patuakhali from Dhaka. - PTI
