Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Restoring peace

Sir, — This is with reference to J.R.C. Raja's letter in these columns (May 2). The Congress leaders did not apologise for the massacre of the Sikhs till they had to go to them seeking votes. But it should not be forgotten that the late Rajiv Gandhi had sought to rationalise the massacre. When Sikhs had voted for the Congress in spite of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, how can one be sure the people of Gujarat will not vote for the BJP again?

The right step would have been to dismiss the Narendra Modi Government and call for elections. Perhaps the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and other Opposition leaders were not sure whether the people would reject the BJP in spite of the minorities openly declaring that not one vote of theirs would go to the BJP. The prime object should be to restore peace whether Modi goes or stays.

Hilda Raja,
Chennai
