ATHLETICS: BRUSSELS: Ethiopia's Berhane Adere won the world half marathon title here on Sunday in one hour, nine minutes and six seconds ahead of Kenya's Susan Chepkemei and Latvian Jelena Prokopcuka. The 29-year-old Adere, who finished third in Bristol, England in last year's event, became the first ever winner from her country following victory on wet, slippery roads in the Belgian capital. The Africans upped the tempo in the later stages and the podium places became evident in the final two kilometres. Adere kicked with just 600 metres to go to edge out Chepkemei, who had to be content with second place for the third year running.

GOLF: NEW ORLEANS: K.J. Choi, trying to become the first South Korean winner on the PGA Tour, had three birdies and two bogeys in a 1-under 71 on Saturday at the Compaq Classic that left him at 12-under 204, a stroke ahead of John Rollins (68) and tour hopeful Bryce Molder (69). ``He says he will pray, he will eat well, he will sing some songs and he will have a good sleep,'' his translator said after Choi finished the third round right where he started — at the top of the leaderboard. First-round leader Dan Forsman had a 72, leaving him two shots off the pace at 10-under 206. Billy Andrade (68) was 9 under.

FOOTBALL: PARIS: Olympique Lyon won the French first division title when it beat RC Lens 3-1 in the competition's final round. Lyon, champion for the first time in its 52 years history, ended the season on 66 points, with Lens second on 64. Both teams will play in the Champions League next season, while third-placed AJ Auxerre, which lost at home to Stade Rennes 3-2, will take part in the Champions League preliminary round. Metz and Lorient, who drew 1-1, were relegated to the second division.

CARDIFF: Second half goals in nine minutes by Ray Parlour and Fredrik Ljungberg fired Arsenal to a 2-0 FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea on Saturday and the first leg of the league and cup double. Parlour fired home a curling right foot shot in the 70th minute and Ljungberg added the second with a similar strike nine minutes later as the Gunners, runner-up to Liverpool last season, won the trophy for the eighth time. Now Arsene Wenger's team goes in search of the league title, needing just a point at Old Trafford on Wednesday to take the championship from Manchester United.

LONDON: Argentine midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has walked out on Manchester United according to a report in News of the World. The newspaper said that Veron was involved in a bust-up with team-mates after United's Champions League elimination against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday and had flown to Rome with his family. ``He was prepared to stay at United but this bust-up is the final straw and he will not be coming back,'' the newspaper quoted a close friend of Veron as saying.
