Agreeing for a discussion under 355 in the Rajya Sabha last week itself was an acknowledgement on the part of the ruling alliance that the Gujarat situation calls for Central intervention'', he said talking to mediapersons here. Mr. Yechury said that normality would return to Gujarat only after the dismissal of the Narendra Modi Government. "Violence is continuing in Gujarat. It is not clear what the former Director-General of Punjab Police, K.P.S. Gill, would be doing in that troubled State. Whatever that be, there is no alternative but to invoke the Constitutional provision to change the present ruling set up there.'' Mr. Yechury, who was here to attend the meeting of district office-bearers of the CPI(M), said it was irresponsible on the part of some political parties to demand that the law and order situation in other States too should be discussed under Rule 184 as it was done on Gujarat in the Lok Sabha. "There is an attempt to spread the misinformation that it is for the first time that Rule 184 has been applied in Parliament. Moreover, no situation anywhere in the country could be compared to what happened in Gujarat,'' he added. He said that even after the violence which killed 2000 persons, the Gujarat Governor did not send even a single line report to the President. The same Governor had acted promptly when just 11 persons were killed in Bihar recommending the dismissal of the State Government. The CPI(M) leader charged the Home Minister, L.K.Advani, with spreading misinformation about the Opposition's reaction/or lack of it to the Godhra carnage. "We had decried the incident promptly. It is wrong to say that the post-Godhra violence was due to the Opposition not condemning it,'' he said. ``In fact, in the Business Advisory Committee of Parliament, we were requested to cooperate with the Government to introduce the budget by not raising any other issue,'' Mr.Yechury pointed out. He expressed surprise over the Home Minister not making public the initial report from the Railway Protection Force which had found that the violence in Godhra was not the result of any pre-planned action. Mr.Yechury accused the RSS and the Sangh Parivar of "using the official machinery'' to perpetuate their agenda of spreading hatred and dividing people. He also condemned the statement of the former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, that the State would be turned into another Gujarat. "It is an unfortunate statement coming from a senior leader and former Chief Minister,'' he noted. He said the Gujarat developments would help in the realignment of political forces. The response of parties during the debate on Gujarat in the Lok Sabha itself was a beginning. "The process of anti-BJP parties coming together has started. The exit of Ramvilas Paswan from the NDA, the dissent of two MPs from the Janata Dal(U) and even the reaction though opportunistic from Mamata Banerjee all are indicative of this,'' he said. He hinted at the possibility of the realignment of non-BJP, non-Congress forces, with the Lok Morcha as its base. The former CPI(M) MP from Rajasthan, Sheopath Singh, the secretary of the State unit, Vasudev Sharma and party MLA, Amra Ram were also present. Prof. Vasudev said the party would hold a public meeting in Jaipur by the month-end, along with other like-minded parties as a part of the campaign against communalism. The State unit would concentrate on areas with potential for the party in future.
