By B. Muralidhar Reddy
To be presided over by the Pakistan President and Chief of the Army Staff , Pervez Musharraf, it would be the first meeting of the commanders of the Army after the controversial Presidential referendum.
The possibility of an informal discussion on what should follow the referendum, particularly in the context of the promised general elections to the national and provincial assemblies at the conference cannot be ruled out. On Saturday, Gen. Musharraf had told a group of foreign correspondents that he intended to hand over power to the Prime Minister and joked that he looked forward to more time after October to play golf and tennis. Gen. Musharraf said his Government was committed to honouring the Supreme Court verdict for transfer of power to a civilian set-up and maintained that the elected Prime Minister would have the freedom to govern the country on a day-to-day basis. At the same time he said he was seriously considering the idea of a National Security Council. ``Power is the power to run a government. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet will have that power. The National Security Council... has the power to check misdoing. I am just going to relax and play tennis and golf.... But I will not allow him (the Prime Minister) to run it badly.''
