The sixth seeded India shocked defending champion Hong Kong 2-1 in a women's group `B' match. Earlier, the Indians had stunned South Korea 3-0. In the match-up against Hong Kong, Joshna Chinappa went down in the opening match to Rebecca Chiu, a silver medallist at the individual event. However, India levelled the scores when Vaidehi Reddy defeated Elise Ng, ranked 50th in the world, 4-9, 9-3, 9-4, 9-2. Then Mekhala Subedar clinched the decider, beating Christina Mak 1-9, 9-4, 9-3, 9-1 in a tense duel. Christina, incidentally, is ranked 38th in the world. In an earlier round, India blanked South Korea 3-0. Joshna Chinappa provided her team a fine start by upsetting the fancied Lee Hai-Kyung in a five setter, fighting back to win 7-9, 5-9, 9- 3, 9-3, 9-5. Vaidehi Reddy and Mekhala Subedar overcame Park Mi- Na and Park Eun-Ok 10-8, 9-3, 9-6 and 9-5, 6-9, 9-5, 9-5 respectively. India is likely to meet Japan in the last four clash on Tuesday.
