Letters to the Editor
Sir, The former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Janardhan Reddy, at a function in Cuddalore said that the term `Reddy' meant "paddy growers". It used to be true, but is no longer so. Interior villages around Cuddalore were controlled by the Reddiars, most of whom were rich and owned lands. They were a contented lot, enjoying a life of affluence. The later half of the 20th century completely changed the village ethos. Reddy youths, sensing the futility in pursuing their traditional vocation, sought higher education and jobs abroad or involved themselves in business and industries. Social dynamics has demolished the hierarchical societal structure of villages.
