Instituted in 1995 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, the fellowship is given to scholars and creative artists. whose research work can contribute to a rich source of material in their respective subjects. Dr. Gopi Chand Narang get the fellowship for his project ` A Critical Study of Ketelaar's First Ever Grammar of Hindustani and Its Relevance to the Present Day Hindi and Urdu'. Dr. Sathyanarana's project is an ` Investigation Into Creativity in Indian Music' and Dr. Sunita Jain will work on `Indian Poet-Painters (1900-2000)- A Study''. The President of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, L. M. Singhvi, was the Chairman of the sub-committee that decided the fellowship this year. In the previous years, the Fellowship had gone to Dr. Dilip Purushotham Chaitre (1996), Prof. K. Ayyappa Panikkar and Ustad Fahimuddin Dagar (1997), Dr. Padma M. Sarangapani and Bambang Sunarto from Indonesia (1998), Dr. K. S. Behra and Dr. Nalini M. Thakur (1999), Prof. D. D. Sharma and Prof. S. N. Goswami (2000).
