India welcomes Suu Kyi's release

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 6. India today welcomed the ``lifting of restrictions'' on the Myanmarese leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and said that it would ``continue with its policy of engagement'' with Yangon.

``India has consistently advocated reconciliation in Myanmar and moves towards the restoration of democracy,'' the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said.

According to her, India regards the freeing of Ms. Aung Suu Kyi from house arrest as `` a concrete step reflective of the desire of the Government of Myanmar to strengthen efforts to realise lasting peace and tranquility in the country''.

This decision, she added, will consolidate the process of national reconciliation in Myanmar.
