Describing Mr. Singhal as a "dangerous enemy of Hindu society," Mr. Reddy challenged his claim of being its representative . "He doesn't represent the glorious traditions of Hindu civilisation, in fact, he is the very antithesis of it''. The Congress leader described Mr. Singhal's statement as shocking by even his own standards and criticised the Prime Minister for not commenting on it. "It is undesirable for the Prime Minister to be a leader of the NDA as well as a cousin of the VHP''.Mr. Singhal had said in Lucknow that Islamic forces had been dealt a body blow by the backlash in Gujarat to the Godhra carnage.
