Over 100 fall ill after taking 'prasadam'

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI MAY 6. More than 100 persons, including 25 children, were taken ill and rushed to the Government-SVRR Hospital here today for emergency treatment. The incident occurred at Durgasamudram village, near here, affecting most of its inhabitants after they consumed a ''prasadam'' distributed to them late last night at the concluding ceremony of Ramanavami festival.

Sources said that those who consumed the prasadam vomitted and had diarrhoea shortly afterwards and then fainted. Affected villagers were brought to the hospital in autorickshaws even till late in the evening.

While most of them were treated as outpatients and discharged after administration of IV fluids, some ten are said to be under observation in the ward. Condition of two of them-- Nirosha (6) and Vidya (10) - is stated to be critical. The hospital authorities are suspecting it to be a case of food poisoning. The police have registered a case.
