Career counselling at employment exchange

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM MAY 6. The District Collector, Sunil Sharma, on Monday announced that the scope of the District Employment Exchange would be widened to enable it to undertake career guidance and counselling for youth.

The announcement was made at the weekly press conference-- as part of the programme to review the performance of various Government departments -- in context of the question that the primary task of employment exchanges providing job opportunities could have lost much of its relevance in the age of ban on recruitment, downsizing, voluntary retirement scheme and privatisation.

Mr. Sharma asked the Regional Director of the Employment Exchange, K. Agava Reddy, to draw up immediately an action plan envisaging the enhancement of scope of the exchange with provision for a full-fledged library, Internet connectively for scanning job opportunities globally and career counselling and guidance.

The existing role of employment exchanges involved registering candidates seeking jobs, sponsoring candidates to employers against the vacancies notified, undertaking employment market information programme by covering various establishments through inspections and vocational guidance through lectures.

According to the statistics offered, while the live registrations of the candidates (technical and unskilled category) was 82,871 up to April, the number of notifications during 2001 were 246 and placements only 67. In the case of clerical category, while the live register up to March showed 1,51,933 candidates, the number of vacancies notified during 2001 were 112 and the vacancies filled 50.

In the case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe backlog vacancies during 2001-02, the employment exchange notified 104 vacancies and sponsored 1,804 candidates of whom 25 found placement.

Matriculates topped the live register for clerical category followed by typists, graduates and candidates with Intermediate qualification.

Referring to complaints about hardship caused to candidates seeking registration, renewal or employment-related information, Mr. Sharma asked the employment exchange officials to streamline the system, expedite all procedures, adopt a friendly disposition towards the job applicants and provide basic amenities for visitors to the office. He also wanted them to register all grievances and attend to them promptly.
