Opinion - Letters to the Editor

End callousness

Sir, — Callousness is a virtue today. To get by you must be a roughneck. It is strange that people slumber comfortably, doing nothing, though they know that their fellow humans are being butchered in Gujarat. Very strange that they do not lament that their democracy does not work to safeguard the life and welfare of the people; very strange that people do not give up an ideology or faith that kills people nor cry that there does not rise a Mahatma who can stop the bloodbath. Had it been Gandhiji, he would have remained in Gujarat, and declared a fast unto death until the bloodshed stopped.

But `ahimsa' and `satyagraha' are the weapons not of cowards but the brave. When a human being is murdered for no reason, remember that life is being viewed as less than a thing and you will be the next prey. Declare a fast unto death. This is the need of the hour. You will be willing if there is a little milk of human kindness in you.

Antony Chirayil,
Kanyakumari, T.N.
