'U.S., Pak. getting closer'

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington May 8. The Bush administration is making the point that the first meeting of the Joint Working Group between the United States and Pakistan on Wednesday is reflective of the sign of closeness in cooperation between the two countries, not an attempt to start "something''.

The Pakistan's Interior Minister, Moinudeen Haider, is in town and will be meeting a number of senior administration officials, in the course of the one-day session. A Statement is expected to be released at the end of the meeting.

Mr. Haider will be seeing, among others, the Coordinator for Counter Terrorism, the Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement and the Deputy Assistant Attorney General. The Pakistani Minister is accompanied by a high-level delegation.

"The two governments look forward to discussing a broad range of bilateral law enforcement issues, including counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, extradiction and money laundering'', the State Department Spokesman, Richard Boucher, said.
