Second U.S. Navy ship in Colombo this week

By Nirupama Subramanian

COLOMBO MAY 8. Days after a refuelling stop by a U.S. destroyer, another U.S. Naval ship will call at Colombo port for a four-day visit this Saturday. The U.S. Embassy announced that the San Diego-based USS Sides, currently deployed "in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the international war on terrorism,'' would call in at the port on a rest-and-recreation visit.

``While here, crew members will have a chance to meet Sri Lankans, experience Sri Lankan culture, sightsee, shop and enjoy Colombo's many attractions,'' the statement said. The ship is a guided missile frigate tasked with ocean patrol and escort for replenishment groups, amphibious forces and military convoys.

The USS Hopper, a guided missile destroyer, made a fuel stop last month. It was the first U.S. Navy ship to call in at Colombo in eight years and followed the visit by a top military official, Brigadier-General Timothy, to Sri Lanka in March.

The General, who is a commander of the Marines, made a high-profile visit to Jaffna and also toured Trincomalee port.
