Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Support the ban

Sirs, — I am writing to announce support for the new measures introduced to ban one-time disposable plastics. As a development specialist focussing on issues of waste management, plastics, especially those designed for one-way, minimum use, are a particular threat to the environment and human health worldwide.

I recently returned from a fact-finding mission in Haiti. There, plastics are a huge problem: disposable bags and bottles clog sewage systems and drains, causing urban flooding.

This is in turn a direct threat to human health. Similar problems exist across the globe where disposable plastics clog waterways, harm agricultural soil and threaten marine life and the fishermen whose livelihood depends on them.

While it is convenient, plastic, especially disposable plastic, is a menace to sustainable development.

Berkeley, U.S.
