JKLF acting chairman held

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR MAY 8 . The acting chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Javed Ahmed Mir, and the Human Rights Front chairman, Mohammad Ahsan Untoo, were among the seven arrested by police in the Maisuma locality here today when they were leading a protest rally against the assault on the JKLF leader, Yaseen Malik, by the Shiv Sena activists in Jammu on Wednesday.

As the shops remained closed, a group of people took to the streets to protest the assault on Mr. Malik in the Government Medical College Hospital. Police swung into action and resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells. This led to stone throwing on police and pitched battles between the protesters and police continued for some time. A smoke shell hit a photographer, Arshad Mir, who was covering the incident. He has been injured seriously and admitted to the hospital.
