Letters to the Editor
Sir, Opposition parties such as the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, the CPI(M) and the CPI have criticised the choice of Manohar Joshi as Lok Sabha Speaker as they consider the Shiv Sena to be a communal party. Many say the choice of Speaker from such a party would send disturbing signals and adversely affect the image of Parliament. But no one has reposed faith in Mr. Joshi. When an MP becomes Speaker, he has to forget his party feelings and he has to be impartial. Let us hope that Mr. Joshi will uphold the norms of Parliament.
Debadatta Baxi,
Sir, There was a time when the Congress could have fielded a dozen able parliamentarians of integrity to be the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and they would have been accepted without any murmur. Today the Congress president needs a Diogenes to find one. A sad commentary on the present state of political leadership. Let us hope that we will get a President who truly represents the high intellectual culture of India.
B. Rathnakar,
