Sir, This is with reference to `Food Security' (May 4) by M.H. Suryanarayana. The pre-Green Revolution period witnessed insecurity on the food front. Subsequently, the nation attained self-sufficiency in production. Food security attained through technological advancement must be reflected on the economic and social front by making food available to the masses. In the recent period, there is emphasis on the quality of food intake in terms of nutritional values. To the extent food security prevails, nutritional security is not attained. Ensuring food security is the task of the Government. Nutritional security has to be ensured by educating the masses, especially the weaker sections. This can be accomplished only by NGOs and the Government can extend support. Developing nations, in addition to possessing financial strength, must be habituated by nutritionally-strong masses.
