Letters to the Editor
Sir, May Day was celebrated all over the world. But our trade union leaders have no justification to feel proud. Out of India's work force of 330 million, only 30 in the organised sector have benefited from their activity. Those in the unorganised sector are getting only a fraction of the pay and benefits of what the others get. In some PSUs, contract labourers get only one-third of what the regular employees get. Union leaders have done nothing to improve work culture. They do not realise that the affluence of the organised sector is by exploiting and depriving those in the unorganised one. The former is being pampered at a time when millions are unemployed and those in the unorganised sector are exploited. Antiquated labour laws, labour leaders with limited vision and votebank politics are responsible for the exploitation of the unorganised sector and the poor growth of the economy.
