Dr. Walia said out of the 938 registered cases, 392 were disposed off by the court, 396 were pending trial and 150 were pending investigation. Further, he informed that 9192 public places and buses were raided and fines worth over Rs 3 lakhs were realised from 6812 persons. The Health Minister added that the responsibility of implementing Sections 8 and 9 of the Act, under which sale of tobacco products are prohibited for youth under the age of 18 and storing tobacco products within the ambit of 100 metres of educational institutions is banned, lay with the police. As many as 580 cases have been registered and 67 shops have been closed under these sections. Dr. Walia said nine teams have been constituted under the respective Chief Medical Officers of the districts to implement the other sections of this Act and as many as 538 public places and 3160 buses have been raided by these teams during the past month leading to realisation of a fine of over Rs 60,000 from 1640 persons.
