The Akbarpur seat was held by the BSP leader, Mayawati, who resigned after being elected to the U.P. Assembly while the Amalpuram seat fell vacant after the death of G. M. C. Balayogi in a helicopter accident. The party also decided to field Abhayakant Prasad from Jharkhand in the Rajya Sabha and Ram Singh from the Dumka (reserved) seat in the State. The Dumka Lok Sabha seat was held by Babulal Marandi, who resigned after becoming the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Two candidates have been cleared to contest Assembly by-elections Satyanarayan Singh Yadav (Danapur, Bihar) and Ram Singh (Dibai, U.P.). Vacancies on these seats arose after the resignations of RJD chief, Laloo Prasad Yadav, who has been elected to the Rajya Sabha and Rashtriya Kranti Party's Kalyan Singh, who was elected from two constituencies. Six names were cleared for the Goa Assembly elections. They are Francis D'Souza (Mapusa), Dayanand Mandrekar (Siolim, Sadguru Harmalkar (Saligoa), Vishwanath Prabhu (Shiroda), Anthony Vaz (Cortalim) and Vasudeo Meng Gaonkar (Sanguem). The party's Central election committee finalised these names at a meeting last night attended by the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, Home Minister, L K Advani, the BJP chief, K Jana Krishnamurthi, and other members of the committee.
