Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Won't be easy

Sir, — K.P.S. Gill is not going to find his task easy. The top echelons of the Gujarat police will resist Mr. Gill getting any credit for bringing normality to the strife-torn State and will not co-operate with him. In fact, they will be anxious to show that Mr. Gill can do nothing more than they did and for this they will get the overt and covert support of the State Government. The Centre appointing a security adviser to a State where an elected Government exists is without precedent and a lot of grey area will remain regarding his authority, powers, and method of reporting and accountability. The inimical State Government will turn these into a perpetual state of confrontation with him. The desired purpose will be served only if the State is brought under President's rule and Mr. Gill is appointed as adviser.

M.K.B. Nambiar,

Mahe
