Subhajit, Indu lift crowns

By Our Sports Reporter

N. R. Indu

MUNNAR MAY 12. He had a lean and hungry look. And when the lanky Railway star Ranabir Das began the men's final against Subhajit Saha with a flourish, the goodly crowd was literally licking its lips, anticipating a battle royale.

Unfortunately, the fight did not last long. In fact, PSCB's Subhajit needed just one game, the second, to fling Ranabir out of the ring. He won the mental battle quite early. ``It was easier than expected,'' said Oil India's Subhajit after the comfortable 4-1 victory which gave him the men's title at the Tata Tea-Kanan Devan National ranking table tennis championship (Southern Region) here on Sunday evening.

In sharp contrast, IOC's N.R. Indu was forced to slog for the women's crown. She jolted the National champion Mouma Das 4-3 at the Tata Tea Hall here.

Indu was forced to play catch-up for a major part of the match, but she clinched the decider with some shrewd play. She kept Mouma guessing with a long backhand chopping sequence, then threw in a forehand topspinner to stun her.

The pint-sized Mouma was a treat to watch. She had a solid smash which just rolled away and her backhand jab, which she executed with a small leap, was a sheer delight. But Indu played well under pressure in the decider and clinched the issue.

``In all the games, I was giving her the initial lead and trying to catch up, but when the scores were level early in the decider I knew the title would be mine,'' said Indu, a Corporate Communications Officer with the IOC in Chennai.Clearly Subhajit, who plays in the Swedish League, was stunned by Ranabir's meek display in the men's final, especially after the second game.

The two stars began the match with a series of fast table-edge topspinners and hard backhand jabs in the first game but as the match progressed, Ranabir, the defending Southern Region champion, virtually went into a shell.

The TTFI President, M.C. Chowhan, who was present at the closing function said he was impressed with the way the event was organised.

``Tata Tea should come up with a multi-purpose stadium at Munnar. It will be a big boost to sport in the area. We can even have some national camps here,'' said Mr. Chowhan, who is also the Commonwealth Table Tennis Association secretary. He also had a word of praise for the chief referee, N. Ganesan.

Mr. V. Venkiteswaran, Executive Director, Tata Tea, gave away the prizes. Mr. John Pereira, the general convener, proposed a vote of thanks.
