WASHINGTON, MAY 13. Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate from a section of the Pentagon as a precautionary measure today, after a sensor detected a chemical smell , a Pentagon spokeswoman said. "It's a precaution," spokeswoman Cheryl Irwin said, adding: "It's not a terrorist attack, it's not a biological attack." A sensor in a steam tunnel detected "a volatile, organic chemical smell" prompting the order to evacuate offices off two Pentagon corridors, she said. John Jester, chief of the Pentagon security force, believes the smell was produced by paint thinner from work being done in the area, she said.
