3 injured in BSF firing

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR MAY 13. Three civilians were injured here when Border Security Force personnel opened fire on a crowd protesting against "direction'' to stop using the public address system at a local mosque.

Locals said that the BSF men had raised the objection and asked the muzzein (who calls for prayers) to discontinue using the loudspeakers. When this was refused, BSF men allegedly caught hold of the muzzein and others coming out of the mosque after prayers and warned of dire consequences. Some of them were beaten up. Soon there was a protest procession.

When the protest turned violent, the BSF men resorted to lathicharge and later opened fire. The muzzein was seriously injured. Senior police and BSF officers visited the locality.
