Opinion - Letters to the Editor

It is shameful

Sir, — It is shameful that the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, refused to meet a women's group representing 14 organisations wanting to discuss the plight of women who have suffered in the Gujarat violence.

Is it fair for the Prime Minister of a country with 50 crore women to refuse to meet their representatives? How can we believe him when he talks about women's empowerment and 33 per cent representation in Parliament for them? If he cannot give a sympathetic hearing to the cry of aggrieved women, where will they go?

K.S. Alamgeer,

Chennai

* * *

Sir, — The news report `PM refuses to meet women's group' (May 15) contains certain excerpts from a memorandum that could not be handed over to the Prime Minister. It says ``(that it was) essential for the nation to recognise that the violence, including sexual violence against women in Gujarat, is unprecedented in scale and savagery.''

I hope the memorandum also contained the fact that during the burning of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra, 20 Hindu women were abducted and their fate is not known even now. This fact is acknowledged by the Godhra Collector.

P. Ramasubramania Sharma,
