Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Gujarat imbroglio

Sir, __ The whole nation is aghast at the gory happenings in Gujarat. The continuing violence, loss of life and property and human sufferings have surpassed all known dimensions. The need of the hour is to pacify the warring groups and bring about sanity, rather than accusing the group or the other.

The State administration has miserably failed in bringing the situation under control. Politicians could have joined hands and doused the fires. It is not late even now to act. Why not politicians of all parties, particularly the leaders of the ruling party from the Centre and the State, go on a padayatra in the troubled areas or sit in satyagraha as Gandhiji did?

The Members of Parliament have a grant of Rs. 2 crores to be spent in their constituencies. Why not allocate this for the relief of riot victims and show their concern for the people's sufferings? Making accusations sitting in the comfort of air-conditioned offices does not help anyone.

A.R.K. Pillai,

Mumbai
