Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Presidential poll

Sir, — It is with dismay one reads about the prospective names of candidates for the Presidential elections. Most of them are on wrong side of the Seventies or Eighties. One is 81 and by the time he retires he will be 85. How actively can he function?

Are political leaders afraid of an eminent person who is non-political and is around 65 or 70? Do they feel that in the company of such a person, they would look mediocre?

Why not consider A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Viren Shah, West Bengal Governor, or Narayanamurthy, who is one of the pioneers of information technology.

B. Balaji Elango,

Coimbatore

Sir,__ The NDA has authorised the Prime Minister to decide on the selection of the President.

The need of the hour is a President who is capable of understanding the issues of the people and the country as a whole! He should neither be a ``rubber stamp'' of ruling parties at the Centre nor a ``mute spectator''.

I am of the view that only candidates selected on the basis of merit can uphold the true spirit of the Constitution and discharge his/her duties as per their conscience without fear or favour.

T.V.R. Potti,

Thiruvananthapuram
