U.N. approval

United Nations May 15. The U.N. Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday unanimously voted to overhaul completely more than a decade old sanctions against Iraq, which will allow free flow of humanitarian supplies, but strengthen the scrutiny of items with dual use, which have both civilian and military utility.

The vote saw all the five permanent members co-sponsoring the draft, and Syria, which had threatened to abstain, fall in line and vote for the resolution.

The resolution, which now extends the `oil-for-food' programme for six months till November 25, will allow humanitarian goods not on the list to be cleared easily for import by Iraq without going through an evaluation process.
