In a release today in response to a news item on pollution in the Adyar river, the TNPCB said ``the parameters of the treated effluent from the CETP (at Pammal) are generally within the permissible limits, except for total dissolved solids, chlorides and sulphates''. One year ago, the Board ordered closure notices to 146 tannery units and the CETP due to their ``unsatisfactory performance''. Later, 123 tanneries were allowed to function after they agreed to take remedial measures and adhere themselves to the standards prescribed by the Board and other monitoring organisations, the release said. In respect of the remaining tanneries, the Board effected the direction for closure.
